Domestic Violence: A Clinical Perspective

Objectives:

This workshop provides medical, substance abuse and mental health professionals with the required information to assist in identifying and assessing the needs and concerns of domestic violence victims. The workshop content is especially appropriate for clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors with a tool which allows them to incorporate an assessment of potential risks during an initial assessment process.

Participants will explore:

  • Dynamics of power and control which influence violence in relationships
  • Justifications used to excuse battering behaviors and a continuum of violence
  • Effects of victimization on the victim(s) and others
  • Clinical assessments
  • Safety planning and interventions that may improve the safety of the victim and identifies local community services
